To increase the safety of your children, increase the safety of your neighbourhood. Keeping your neighbourhood safe is the responsibility of concerned adults working together to prevent crime.
Start with your local police department. They can tell you what special crime problems your community might have and what you can do about them.
- Participate in the Block Parent Program.
- Start a Safe Arrival Program at your school. Any child who is not present at 9:00 a.m. will be checked out, and the Police notified quickly, if necessary. It is up to you to notify the school if your child will be absent.
- Many children are alone after school. Start an after-school program, at school, a church, or a community centre.
- Find out the school policy for children leaving with adults other than the parent or guardian. What school security measures exist to insure students' safety? Contact other parents, school officials to improve school security.
- If a crime is committed, don't disturb any evidence. More "clues" provide better chances for catching criminals.
- Be sure to report crimes or suspicious activities to the police. They need your help, so they, in turn, can help you in crime proofing yourself and your community.
