BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY
Woodstock, ON (September 1, 2023) – Children are returning to school next week, and the Woodstock Police Service would like everyone to have a safe back to school season.
This time of year, everyone needs to be extra diligent in practicing road safety, as children and families are excited and preparing to get back into routine. Police will be conducting focused patrols in school zones throughout September to ensure the safety of everyone in those areas.
Here are some back to school safety tips to keep in mind this season:
Drivers
- Slow down in school zones and obey no stopping and no parking zones. They help keep the flow of traffic moving and prevent those getting out of a vehicle from being struck by oncoming traffic.
- Do not block crosswalks and keep your eyes open for crossing guards or other pedestrians entering the roadways.
- Never proceed through crosswalks until the crossing guards have cleared the roadway.
Walkers
- Practice the daily route to school and encourage your kids to walk the same route every day.
- Walk in groups, there is safety in numbers.
- Put the distractions away and be alert – avoid texting or using headphones while walking.
- Walk on sidewalks, cross at crosswalks when available and wait for the crossing guards directions.
Bike/Scooter Riders
- Always wear a helmet that is properly fitted and secured using the 2V1 rule.
- Teach kids the rules of the road: ride single file on the right side of the road, come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk across the road.
- Watch for opening car doors and other hazards.
- Use hand signals when turning or stopping.
- Wear bright coloured clothes to be visible to other road users.
Bus Riders
- When getting off the bus remind children to look for moving vehicles before crossing the road.
- Walk around the front of the bus so the driver can see you.
- Sit in your seat, face forward and follow the bus driver’s rules.
