Young pedestrians hit by vehicle
WOODSTOCK, ON (May 12, 2023) – On Thursday, May 11, 2023 at approximately 5:00 p.m., a 14-year-old and two 13-year-old youth were crossing Dundas Street in the area of Finke Street when a vehicle hit two of the youth. Both received assessments at hospital as a precaution.
The 17-year-old driver of Woodstock is facing a Dangerous Operation charge.
Police would like to remind drivers to be cautious and aware of pedestrians, cyclists, and others using roads and sidewalks, particularly in the nice weather when there are more people outdoors. Keep an eye out for pedestrians getting in and out of vehicles parked on roads and walking between parked vehicles. Drive slowly through residential areas and school zones where children could be playing.
Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Tips:
- Walk on sidewalks if there is one available.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid walking/riding with ear buds or headphones on or while using a cellphone.
- Cross the street at designated crossing areas or intersections.
- Look in all directions (left, right, front & behind) and make eye contact with drivers before crossing a street.
- If crossing the road at a traffic light, wait for the walking person symbol before crossing. If the hand begins flashing while you are crossing the road, continue crossing
- Obey all street signs if riding a bike on the roadways (ie. Stop signs).
- Wear safety equipment such as a helmet while riding bikes, scooters, skate & long boards, roller blades & skates, etc.
- Children riding bikes on the sidewalk, should stop, get off their bike and walk their bike across the street.
